The Lip Flip

When smiling, does your upper lip seem to disappear? Are you bothered by a gummy smile but don’t want a drastic change to the size + appearance of your lips? If you answered yes to any of these, then a Botox Lip Flip may already be on your radar. Unlike dermal fillers, which add volume to the lips, Botox creates the illusion of a plumper upper lip by temporarily relaxing the muscles above the lip line.

If you’re not ready for lip enhancement with fillers, this 10-minute treatment is a short-term alternative that’s already in high demand. Patients love the results of their Botox Lip Flip for minimizing smoker’s lines + adding a subtle pout to their smile.

  • Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event. Redness, swelling + bruising may be apparent in that time period.
  • It is recommended to discontinue the use of Aspirin, NSAIDS, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment to minimize bruising or bleeding. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods and cigarettes 24-48 hours before and after your treatment. All of these factors may increase risk of bruising and swelling.
  • Starting Arnica supplements at least 2 days prior to injections may help with bruising.
  • Let the provider know if you have a history of cold sores. An antiviral may be prescribed.
  • You may not have an active rash in the area being treated.
  • You may not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Redness or sensitivity might be present (and last up to a few hours).
  • Use Tylenol only as needed for any soreness.
  • Do NOT manipulate the treated area for 4 hours following treatment.
  • Do NOT wear a hat for 3 days following treatment.
  • Do NOT lie down for 4 hours after your treatment.
  • Do NOT perform activities involving straining, heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
  • It is recommended that you wait at least 2 weeks before having any other facial treatments (i.e. facials, massages, lasers, ultrasounds, micro-dermabrasion).
  • It can take approximately 5-7 days for results to be seen. If the desired result is not seen after 2 weeks of your treatment you may need additional injections.

Wrinkle Relaxer FAQs

While there’s no magic number that can determine exactly when you’ll need a refresh, we typically suggest refresh treatments every 2.5-4 months. Many lifestyle factors like exercise, smoking + sun exposure affect the longevity of wrinkle relaxers.

In general, the effects of wrinkle relaxers begin to appear in 5-7 days, peak in 2 weeks + gradually decline after about 2.5-3 months. Getting on a maintenance treatment plan with your provider will not only keep your look fresh but also be more friendly to your pocketbook!

The needle is extremely small so it feels like nothing more than a pin prick. Other than the injection itself, the procedure is painless.

Side effects are usually mild and transient and most commonly include swelling or bruising at the injection site, mild headache, or flu-like symptoms. Undesired impairment of muscle function may also occur, but is usually associated with poor injection technique, inappropriate patient selection or aftercare not being followed.

Botox is a neuromuscular blocking agent, which means it causes paralysis of the injected muscle by preventing the release of acetylcholine from motor nerve terminals. The muscle strengthens again as the nerves regenerate.

Most Botox injections can relax muscles for 2-4 months. The Lip Flip with Botox or Dysport lasts about 8-16 weeks. Since the mouth is constantly moving, it causes the body to metabolize the neuromodulator faster. However, you don’t have to wait long to see results from the procedure. Many patients see a noticeable improvement within a couple of days.

The treatment is virtually painless + completed in less than 10 minutes. Most patients compare the treatment to having a slight pinprick + don’t ask for topical numbing cream. Depending on your anatomy + degree of muscle contraction, you may need two to four Botox injections to achieve the desired effect.

  • Subtle enhancement for a slightly fuller looking upper lip + prevents upper lip from vanishing when smiling
  • Corrects a gummy smile to reveal more teeth + less gum tissue
  • Softens smoker’s lines above lips
  • Cost-effective alternative to lip augmentation with fillers
  • No downtime
  • Provides natural results in about 5-7 days

The most common Lip Flip side effects are general soreness + redness at the injection sites. Bruising + swelling can also occur but are rare when a skilled injector performs the procedure.

Injecting neuromodulators requires a very high level of training. This ensures patients do not end up with asymmetrical smiles or an inability to utilize their lip muscle. These undesirable side effects gradually wear off as the Botox dissipates in the body.

When done correctly, a Lip Flip provides patients with a natural result.
